Kent Shafer is the vice mayor of Delaware and seeking his third term on council.
He considers it both a privilege and an honor to serve on council in the city he has called home for nearly 20 years.
Kent spent more than 33 years with the Columbus Division of Police, retiring in 2012 after 18 years as a commander. He has held assignments and the patrol, traffic, gang, street crime and narcotics units, and the business office. He considers public safety the number one role of government.
While commander of the Division’s Strategic Response Bureau, Kent designed and created a program to improve the way the Division responded to community concerns and street-level crime. For his efforts, Kent was presented with the Washington Times Foundation National Service Award.
In addition to serving as vice mayor and an at-large council member, Kent is chairman of the city’s Parking and Safety Committee. He is a member of the Finance Committee, and serves as the city’s representative to the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission.
He believes a good financial management of tax dollars and providing exceptional service should be high priorities for all elected officials. Kent is committed to working with fellow council members, city staff and fellow citizens to keep Delaware a great place to live, work and raise a family.
Kent owns a consulting business focused on criminal justice, public safety and public policy matters. He is a member of numerous criminal justice professional organizations and writes professionally on leadership, criminal justice in public safety issues.
He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and has undergraduate degrees in electronics engineering in from the Ohio Institute of Technology and business administration from Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
